What to Expect from Acupuncture in Lewes
If you are new to acupuncture, it is normal to feel unsure about what will happen at your first appointment.
If you are wondering what to expect from acupuncture in Lewes, this page explains how appointments work, what treatment feels like and how to prepare.
At Esaias Hobbs Acupuncture in Lewes, treatment begins with careful listening, Chinese medical assessment and a clear explanation of the treatment approach. The aim is to make the process calm, practical and understandable from the start.
You do not need to know exactly what kind of treatment you need before booking. We will go through your symptoms, health history and wider health pattern together.

Before Your Appointment
Before your first appointment, it can be useful to think about what you would most like help with.
You may want to make a note of:
- your main symptoms
- how long they have been present
- what makes them better or worse
- current medication or treatment
- relevant medical history
- sleep, digestion, energy and stress levels
- any questions you want to ask
You do not need to prepare anything complicated. The consultation will guide the process.
Your First Appointment
Your first appointment includes time for consultation, Chinese medical diagnosis and treatment.
We will discuss your main concern, but also look at the wider pattern of your health. This may include sleep, digestion, energy, stress, pain, temperature, emotional wellbeing, lifestyle and medical history.
Pulse and tongue diagnosis may also be used. These are traditional diagnostic methods in Chinese medicine and help build a clearer picture of how your system is presenting on the day.

What Treatment Feels Like
Acupuncture uses very fine, sterile, single-use needles.
People experience acupuncture differently. Some feel a small prick, dull ache, heaviness, warmth, tingling or a spreading sensation around the point. Others feel very little.
Treatment is usually calm and steady. Many people find that they begin to relax once the needles are in place.
If anything feels uncomfortable, you can say so at any point. Treatment can always be adjusted.
What to Wear
Wear comfortable clothing where possible.
Depending on the treatment, you may need access to areas such as the lower legs, arms, back, abdomen or shoulders. Towels are used where needed, and treatment is carried out respectfully and carefully.
If you are coming from work or another appointment, do not worry. Practical adjustments can be made.
How Long Treatment Takes
An Initial Consultation & Treatment allows enough time to understand your symptoms, make an assessment and begin treatment.
Follow-up appointments are shorter and focus on continuing treatment, reviewing progress and adjusting the approach where needed.
The exact length of appointments is listed on the Fees & Booking page.
After Treatment
After acupuncture, people may feel relaxed, clearer, sleepy, lighter, or more settled. Sometimes symptoms change quickly; at other times, change is gradual.
It is usually best to avoid rushing straight into intense activity if you can. Drinking water, eating normally and allowing some space after treatment can help you notice how your body responds.
Occasionally, people feel tired after treatment. This usually passes, but it is worth allowing for a quieter period afterwards if your system is already depleted.
How Many Treatments Will I Need?
This depends on the nature of the problem, how long it has been present and how your body responds.
Recent or straightforward problems may need fewer sessions. Long-standing, complex or recurring patterns often need steadier treatment over a longer period.
At your first appointment, we will discuss what seems realistic and review progress as treatment continues.

Is Acupuncture Safe?
When a properly trained practitioner carries it out, acupuncture has a strong safety record.
I use sterile, single-use needles and take account of your health history, medication and current condition.
If acupuncture is not appropriate for you, we will discuss this before treatment.
If You Are Nervous About Needles
Many people who feel nervous about needles still manage acupuncture well.
Acupuncture needles are much finer than injection needles. Treatment can begin gently, with fewer points, and you can ask questions or pause at any time.
The aim is not to push through discomfort. The aim is to work carefully and at a pace that your system can tolerate.
Not Sure Whether to Book?
